FG Working To Announce A New National Minimum Wage

The Federal Government is working to announce a new national minimum wage to alleviate the economic hardship faced by Nigerian workers.

This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr Kamil Shoretire, on Tuesday September 22, 2026, during a capacity-building workshop organised for labour correspondents, in Abuja.

Shoretire confirmed that consultations were underway to set an official date for negotiations.

“We are yet to announce the timetable for that, but background discussions are already ongoing. When it’s time to get the press involved, in what has been proposed and what is being negotiated, it will be revealed to you,” he said.

According to the permanent secretary, the government was also engaging workers in sectors where disputes over salaries and allowances remained unresolved.

The development comes amid growing pressure from organised labour for a review of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage approved by the Federal Government, with effective date of  April 1, 2024.

The workers are also requesting an increase to ₦500,000 and an immediate wage award, arguing that rising living costs have reduced the purchasing power of the current ₦70,000
