INEC Has Announced New Dates For 2027 General Elections In Nigeria
The National Electoral Commission (INEC), has released a revised 2027 general elections timetable, shifting dates for the presidential and governorship polls in compliance with the Electoral Act, 2026.
In the new timetable, INEC fixed January 16, 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly contests are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 26th February, 2026, and signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the adjustment followed the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the signing into law of new Electoral Act, 2026.
Under the revised electoral calendar, political parties are required to submit their membership register to INEC between April 1, 2026 and April 21, 2026, which requires registers to be submitted “not later than 21 days to the conduct of party primaries.”
Party primaries and dispute resolution processes are expected to take place from 23 April to 30 May, 2026.
Campaigns for Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for state elections will commence on 9 September, 2026.
